After coming in to office at the end of June President Duterte’s drug riddance campaign is in full swing. True to his word, the initial bloody push to bring criminals to justice has gathered widespread attention.
Police have seized over 300 kilograms of methamphetamine, known locally as shabu. Working from the top down, Duterte has also named 5 police generals who conspired to protect drug syndicates and the names of Chinese nationals who were involved in the drug trade.
Drug addicts and dealers are being given the chance to turn themselves in or risk being shot on sight as Duterte has vowed to protect authorities for doing so. Police are actively engaging in buy-bust operations in which drug pushers are being arrested, or in some cases, killed. At press time 110 confirmed dealers have been killed, although it is estimated that the number is closer to 200.
Websites such as the Dailymail.co.uk and Inquirer.net have published thorough articles including dozens of pictures of the aftermath, along with an updated daily list of drug dealers who have been killed nationwide.
