Very few people reading this article would have been in Angeles City in 1965 when the Angeles Aikido Club, the oldest dojo in Pampanga first opened.
The founding member, Chan Hok-seng, was one of the original students of the Father of Aikido in the Philippines, Manila Aikido Club’s Benjamin Galarpe, a retired U.S. veteran who began training Aikido in Guam during the 1950’s. Aikido was In their own right these individuals were legends of their times, answering directly to Koichi Tohei, who was a 10th Dan aikidoka and the founder of Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido in Japan.
Fast forward to today. Following in the footsteps of his father Chan Hok-seng, presumably in a similarly relaxed and laid back manner, second generation martial arts instructor and Ing Dojo proprietor Marnie Chan, an Angeles City native, has made his knowledge of training accessible to anyone in the area who is willing to learn. Not only did Marnie grow up in a family steeped in martial arts, but he spent another 2 decades studying and training both martial arts and Brazilian jujitsu in the U.S., returning to Pampanga 3-years ago with his family.
Marnie is a laid back yet energetic fellow who first strikes you (no pun intended) as a man of great discipline, something most of us know very little about. He also owns and operates the carwash located on Perimeter road just before the turn to Friendship gate, which happens to be situated just in front of the training facility.
Ing Dojo caters primarily to foreigners. It’s not all about technique either; you need to get in to strength and cardio training. For those of you who need a refresher, here’s a list of definitions for a few different areas of self-defense focus:
Aikido: Aikido is really a way of life, but when it comes right down to the physicality of it all – it consists of movements that redirect the momentum of an opponent’s attack, using throws or joint locks.
CrossFit: CrossFit workouts incorporate different elements of training, including interval training, weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, calisthenics, and other exercises.
Mixed Martial Arts: As the name denotes, MMA is a combination of striking and grappling, both standing and on the ground, which uses various elements of different kinds of martial arts training.
You don’t have to have experience in order to join a class, which happens to be just P250 per session, if you feel more comfortable working one-on-one you could have private training for P500 per hour. You only need to come ready and dressed for a workout. Ing Dojo’s hours of operation are night times, Monday through Saturday, and no registration is required.
