I did not write about this raid raid right away, because again, many different stories. It took place in the evening of 15 Jan (Wed) and involved the two bars are located next to the Orchid Inn, just down from the King's Head Pub, Lovely Paradise Resto Bar and Aby Lyn Wine Bar. The usual raiders were involved and once again the notorious International Justice Mission (IJM) was involved in the entrapment against the owners of the establishments. Arrested were Wine Bar cashier Cristine Tanola (Tin-Tin) and Malou Palconit. At the Lovely Paradise bar arrested Helen delos Angeles, Josie Mondemar and one foreigner, a German national. Of the 21 ladies arrested allegedly 11 were found to be minors (This according to a local newspaper). They are being held at Station Four.
Since so many questions were being asked about this raid I decided to announce it here instead of waiting for the Feb edition. I hope to have more detailed information by the time Feb rolls around.
I was also trying to get an interview with Balibago Barangay Captain Tony Mamac in regards to an announcement in the 14 Jan issue of the Sun Star that he was forming an Anti-Prostitution Task Force and warned individuals and establishments engaged in human trafficking. The Anti-Trafficking Persons Act of 2003 or Republic Act # 9208 expressly prohibits the trafficking of persons by any means for the purpose of prostitution, pornography and sexual exploitation.
My concern is how this Task Force will be used. There is a lot of room for abuse here and I have been attempting to get an appointment. To date he has not answered my text messages or Emails which leads me to believe he does not want to be open with the public on the details of this new operation of his. My personal interaction with Tony in the past has convinced me that he is a straight up official and his silence on this issue puzzles me. I guess the year 2014 will see much more harassment of the bars. I can only hope that this detention of a foreigner is an isolated case.
