Long known for its touch of European roots, Clarkton Hotel on Don Juico Avenue has recently brought some Italian zest to its substantial menu.
Clarkton’s wood fired pizza has both a fresh and smoky taste – best served on the spot, although it also works well in the microwave later when you need to top up. What’s the big deal with fire ovens? Using fire in particular helps the pizza keep a lot of flavor. Conventional pizza ovens used to specification still tend to overcook the pizza, which is something we have all grown accustom to every time we dial up for delivery. Fire demands a pizza chef’s touch, to monitor the cooking time and watch the pie closely to determine the wellness.
Clarkton’s wood fire pizza is impressive and could very well be ranked right next to S & R’s New York style pizza depending on the palate. The style is not nearly as heavy, but the light crispiness is what you’re looking for in a fresh pizza like this. The sauce was not spicy Italian like I had first imagined, nor was it sweet like a Filipino sauce. The key to a good pizza is to not let any one of the ingredients overwhelm the other, and Clarkton’s pizza has an excellent balance to it. The Hawaiian that was cooked up at our request was, for lack of a better word, superb.
Upon first site of the restaurant, you might not notice the massive wood fire oven located in the far back corner. Most people are attracted to the ambiance of Clarkton’s restaurant – it is a clean, air-conditioned environment with attentive staff and comfortable surroundings. It is one of the best places to grab a late night meal when you’re headed home.
For years Clarkton has drawn a global crowd as one of the best all-around properties in town. Certain tourists are keen on staying as close to walking street as possible; where Clarkton excels is that it is close enough to everything and yet far enough away to avoid the things people don’t like about the entertainment district. Get down there for a drink at Mirrors bar, take a table near the swimming pool if you’d like – if you’re not up for the buffet or a la carte menu, give this pizza a shot, it won’t disappoint.
